Streptocarpus saxorum
This plant is a perennial, semisucculent herb native to southeastern Kenya and Tanzania. Its branching stems carry whorls of three small, fleshy, hairy leaves. Slender flower stalks rise above the foliage, bearing violet flowers with five rounded lobes and a white throat marked by purple lines. In the wild, it grows on rocks and cliff faces, often where periodic mist supplies moisture. Its trailing growth suits hanging baskets. It can flower for much of the year under favorable conditions and is easily propagated from stem-tip cuttings. Twisting seed capsules open to release many tiny seeds. Photographed in Armenia, Colombia.
