Opuntia ficus-indica (Prickly Pear)

Originating in Mexico, the prickly pear, has been a staple in agricultural economies, especially in arid and semiarid regions worldwide, due to its long history of domestication​. A diverse utility accompanies this plant. Beyond its traditional use as a food source, it finds applications in medicine, cosmetics, and even ecological ventures. Medicinally, it's been suggested to aid in managing Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, and even alcohol hangovers. Its antioxidant properties have been highlighted, which play a role in preventing inflammation and cardiovascular dysregulation​. Its fruits are sweet-tasting, resembling watermelon, strawberries, and figs. The fruit called higos in Colombia and is normally eaten raw after chilling and as a juice.
