Nicotiana tabacum (Tobacco)
Native to South America, emerged from a hybridization of Nicotiana sylvestris, N. tomentosiformis, and possibly N. otophora1. Cultivated worldwide, for its nicotine-rich leaves used in various tobacco products. Historically, the plant has served both medicinal and cultural purposes. Its alkaloids, particularly nicotine, were employed for pain relief, and its leaves were used topically on wounds due to potential antimicrobial properties. Moreover, it has played a central role in traditional ceremonies, enhancing spiritual experiences. Photographed in the central Andes mountain range of Colombia (Cordillera Central).
