Water lily with pale pink and cream petals, yellow stamens, and floating green leaves

Nymphaea ampla

Native to tropical and subtropical America, this aquatic perennial water lily roots in the muddy beds of freshwater habitats. Its broad floating leaves have sharply toothed edges and prominent veins beneath. White flowers with numerous yellow stamens rise above the water and open during the day. In Veracruz, Mexico, it flowers throughout the year in lagoons, marshes and river margins. Its fruits contain numerous small seeds. Photographed in the department of Bolivar, Colombia.
