Maxillaria picta
Native to southeastern and southern Brazil and neighbouring parts of Paraguay and northeastern Argentina, this evergreen orchid grows on trees or rocks in seasonally dry tropical habitats. It forms clumps of small oval pseudobulbs. Individual flowers arise on stalks from their bases, mainly in winter and spring. The flowers are yellow to white with dark red, purple, or brown spots and can reach about two inches across. Photographed in Florida.
