The turquoise waters of Laguna Humantay reflecting the surrounding steep green slopes and snow-capped cliffs of the Vilcabamba mountain range in the Peruvian Andes
Humantay Lake, Peru

Humantay Lake (Laguna Humantay) is a stunning glacial lake located in the Andes of southern Peru, sitting at an altitude of approximately 13,780 feet above sea level. Nestled beneath the towering, snow-capped Humantay Mountain—part of the Vilcabamba Range—the lake is renowned for its vibrant turquoise waters, which are fed by melting glaciers. Its striking color comes from the mineral-rich runoff combined with the purity of high-altitude meltwater, creating a surreal, jewel-like body of water that reflects the dramatic Andean peaks above.

Accessible via a popular day hike from the Soraypampa base camp, Humantay Lake is often included in the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. The hike is relatively short but steep, offering sweeping views of the surrounding alpine valleys and highland vegetation. The area holds spiritual significance for local Quechua communities, who consider the lake sacred and often leave offerings (or “apachetas”) at its shores. Humantay Lake is one of the most breathtaking destinations in Peru.
