Glottiphyllum linguiforme has a bright yellow many-petaled flower among thick green leaves and dry rounded seed capsules

Glottiphyllum linguiforme (Tongue-leaf Mesemb)

Native to the Little Karoo around Oudtshoorn in South Africa’s Western Cape, this compact perennial succulent grows close to the ground. Short branches carry pairs of very fleshy, tongue-shaped leaves. Large yellow flowers have numerous slender petals surrounding a central cluster of stamens. The dry, many-chambered seed capsules persist among the leaves. In its native habitat, the plant occurs where succulent thicket meets open vegetation. It is Vulnerable in the wild, where grazing, trampling, and soil erosion degrade its remaining habitat. Photographed in Florida.
