A shrub originating from the southern regions of South America that thrives in temperate and subtropical zones showcasing a high degree of hardiness compared to other fuchsia species. Known for its picturesque red and purple flowers that beckon hummingbirds, it holds a semi-evergreen character with arching red branches. Its cultivars and hybrids have since found a place in gardens, patios, and conservatories around the globe and has a long blooming period. Cultivars of this species have received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. The plant’s berries are edible with a tart, lemony freshness, likened to stoneless cherries. Its flowers too are edible, used in salads or as garnishes, adding a decorative touch with their vibrant colors. Naturalized in Colombia. Photographed in the Cocora Valley, Colombia.
