Croton palanostigma

Native to tropical South America, this tree grows in wet forests and secondary vegetation, reaching about 10 to 39 feet tall. Its broad leaves are often heart-shaped, with a pair of glands at the base and tiny branched hairs on both surfaces. Small male and female flowers form long clusters, followed by rounded, hairy seed capsules. Its red sap has traditional medicinal uses in the Amazon region. Photographed in Peru.
