Cluster of Croton palanostigma flowers with numerous small pale yellow blossoms and rounded buds on a stem
Croton palanostigma

Croton palanostigma is a tree to the western Amazon basin. The species is distinguished by its elongated racemes that bear clusters of small yellowish-white flowers, each characterized by numerous radiating stamens that give the inflorescence a delicate, spiky appearance. This tree is particularly notable for producing a resinous latex known locally as "sangre de grado" or "dragon’s blood," which has been widely used in traditional Amazonian medicine. The resin has been applied to wounds and ulcers for its reputed healing properties and is also used internally for gastrointestinal ailments such as ulcers and diarrhea. Photographed in Peru.
