Copiapoa cactus with two open yellow flowers among black spines and rocks
Copiapoa humilis subsp. tenuissima

Copiapoa humilis is native to the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, where it grows in arid coastal and inland zones at low elevations. This cactus forms small, clustering mounds of globular stems, usually less than two inches in diameter, covered in dense spines that range in color from black to gray as they age. The flowers are bright yellow, typically emerging from the crown of the stem during the summer months, and they are funnel-shaped with multiple petals arranged around a central cluster of stamens. Fruits are small, round, and contain numerous seeds. Within the species, there are recognized subspecies such as Copiapoa humilis subsp. tenuissima. Photographed in Peru.
