Cenchrus polystachios (Buffelgrass)

Cenchrus polystachios is a perennial grass species native to Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. This grass is adapted to arid and semi-arid regions and has been widely introduced to other parts of the world due to its resilience and utility in livestock forage production. It typically thrives in dry, open habitats such as savannas, scrublands, and grasslands, where it forms dense clumps that can withstand drought conditions and poor soil. It has become invasive in the southwestern United States, Australia, and parts of South America. Buffelgrass is also highly flammable and contributes to an increased fire risk, as it dries out and creates a dense, continuous fuel layer that can support intense wildfires.
