Cassia roxburghii, also called the red cassia, is native to India and Sri Lanka, where it grows in tropical and subtropical lowlands. It is a medium-sized tree that can reach 35–40 feet. Its flowering is notable for producing clusters of reddish to orange blossoms that set it apart from other cassia species more commonly displaying yellow flowers. The species is cultivated outside its native area on a limited scale. The flowers of this species display five thick, overlapping petals with a rich reddish-orange tone, accented by prominent stamens that arch forward from the center of the bloom. This form gives the flower a more substantial, almost leathery appearance compared to the lighter-textured petals of other cassias. Photographed in Florida.
