Brya ebenus
Native to Cuba, this evergreen shrub or small tree has arching, thorny branches and small glossy leaflets. It can reach about 26 feet tall. Yellow pea-shaped flowers appear along the branches after rain; they are followed by thin seed pods. Its dark wood, traded as cocuswood, is used for musical instruments such as flutes and for decorative inlays. It has been introduced to Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, and India. Photographed in Panama.
