White and pale yellow Brunfelsia undulata flowers extend on long narrow tubes along a branch with pointed green leaves

Brunfelsia undulata

Native to Jamaica, this evergreen shrub or small tree grows in wet tropical conditions and can reach about 20 feet tall. Its leaves are oval to lance-shaped, with pointed ends, and the plant can produce shoots around the base. The flowers have long narrow tubes and five rounded lobes with wavy edges. They open white, then fade to cream or pale yellow over several days. In cultivation, flowers often form clusters near the ends of branches, and fragrant forms are grown as ornamentals. The fruits are seed capsules. It has been introduced to Ecuador. Brunfelsia plants are poisonous if eaten, especially their fruits. Photographed in Florida.
