Bucquetia glutinosa

Native to the Colombian Andes, this shrub grows in moist páramo and along streams at elevations of about 6,900 to 13,500 feet. It commonly reaches about 10 feet tall and has square stems with peeling bark. Its opposite, oval leaves have three prominent veins, and the young leaves can feel sticky. Pink to purple flowers with yellow anthers are followed by seed capsules. It colonizes disturbed ground and is useful in restoring mountain vegetation. It is also grown as an ornamental, and its solid wood is used for fence posts. Photographed in the eastern Andes mountain range of Colombia.
