Begonia ferruginea

Native to Colombia and northwestern Venezuela, this shrub grows in wet Andean vegetation and can also have a climbing habit. In Colombia, it occurs between about 3,300 and 13,100 feet. Its red flowers have hairy outer surfaces and occur on hairy stalks. The plant bears separate male and female flowers and is pollinated by hummingbirds. Female flowers contain a nectar-like liquid that attracts the birds. Male flowers attract the same birds by resembling the female flowers. Photographed in Colombia.
