Red Bauhinia galpinii flowers with black stigmas
Bauhinia galpinii (Red Orchid Bush)

Originating from the savannas of South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe, the Red Orchid Bush is a sprawling, semi-deciduous shrub, it can reach a height of 10 feet and spread as wide as 15 feet, showcasing deeply-lobed heart-shaped dark green leaves and bright brick-red or salmon-colored blooms. It also makes a good espalier subject, for training against a wall or other flat surface. The plant shows hardiness to temperatures as low as 20-25 degrees Fahrenheit. Photographed in Florida.
