A curved Anthurium hookeri fruiting spadix carries tightly packed bright red berries

Anthurium hookeri

Native from Saint Lucia and nearby Caribbean islands into northern South America, this evergreen perennial grows on trees in wet tropical habitats. Its broad leaves form a large rosette, giving it the bird’s-nest growth form. Tiny black glandular dots occur on the leaf undersides, and finer veins form a ladder-like pattern between the larger veins. Small flowers cover an elongated spadix beside a narrow spathe. The berries ripen white, a distinctive feature of this species. Photographed in Colombia.
