Bright red Anthurium lucens berries line a curved fruiting stalk beside a broad leaf

Anthurium lucens

Native from southern Mexico to Honduras, this perennial herb grows on trees or on the ground in wet tropical habitats. Its short stem is surrounded by roots and fibrous remnants of protective leaf sheaths. The leaves are deeply lobed at the base and taper gradually toward their tips. Their lower surfaces have conspicuous raised veins, while the upper surfaces are moderately glossy. Photographed in Florida.
