Anthurium andraeanum (Flamingo Flower)


Native to Colombia and Ecuador, this evergreen perennial herb grows naturally on trees in wet forests. Cultivated plants commonly reach about 2 feet tall. The colorful spathe is a modified leaf surrounding a spike of tiny flowers called a spadix. Cultivars and hybrids have red, pink, orange, purple, white, or green spathes and can flower year-round in warm conditions. Their long-lasting flowering stems are used in arrangements. The species has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. All parts contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals and are harmful if eaten; the sap can irritate skin and eyes.
