Ansellia africana (Leopard Orchid)
Native to tropical and southern Africa, this orchid grows on tree branches, occasionally on rocks, and can reach about 4 feet tall. Upright aerial roots form baskets that catch fallen leaves and other debris, providing nutrients as the material decomposes. Swollen stems called pseudobulbs store water and nutrients, helping it endure drought. Its yellow flowers are spotted with reddish-brown or maroon and have a herbal, honey-like fragrance. The species is classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Photographed in Florida.
