Cluster of bright red tubular Anthopterus wardii flowers with dark centers resting on a large green leaf

Anthopterus wardii

Native from Panama to Ecuador, this shrub in the heath family grows in wet tropical habitats, often attached to other plants as an epiphyte. It uses its host for support rather than obtaining food from it. In Colombia, it is recorded from sea level to about 7,000 feet in the Andean and Pacific regions. Its leaves are often arranged alternately, and its tubular flowers have winged corollas with reddish-orange bases, a green band and white tips. Photographed in the Chocó region of Ecuador.
