Clustered spike of small white anredera cordifolia flowers with star-shaped petals and protruding stamens, set against green heart-shaped leaves
Anredera cordifolia

Native to South America, Anredera cordifolia is a vigorous, twining perennial vine in the Basellaceae family. It is known for its heart-shaped, fleshy leaves and fragrant, cream-white flowers arranged in elongated, drooping racemes. This species reproduces both by seed and by aerial tubers that develop in the leaf axils, which can easily sprout to form new plants. In many regions outside its native habitat it has become invasive, rapidly covering trees and structures. The fleshy leaves and tubers store water, allowing it to survive seasonal droughts, and its rapid growth makes it an aggressive climber capable of forming dense mats over other plants. Photographed in Peru.
