Ligustrum vulgare has a compact cluster of white tubular flowers and rounded buds among smooth green leaves

Ligustrum vulgare (Common Privet)

Native from northwestern Africa through Europe to northwestern Iran, this vigorous shrub has opposite, glossy green leaves. The foliage is oval to lance-shaped, and plants may retain part of their leaves in mild conditions. Small white, tubular flowers form airy clusters at the ends of branches, followed by dark fleshy fruits dispersed by birds. It has become invasive in North Carolina, spreading into moist and disturbed habitats. Its leaves and fruits are poisonous to people, pets and livestock if eaten. Photographed in Colombia.
