Cluster of bright yellow Brya ebenus flowers along a slender woody stem with small green leaves against a blurred green and yellow background
Brya ebenus

Native to the Caribbean, Brya ebenus is a small tropical tree in the legume family known for its vibrant yellow flowers. This species thrives in dry, limestone-based soils and is adapted to withstand drought conditions. Its inflorescences are composed of pea-like blossoms that emerge in clusters along the branches, often appearing after rainfall, which can trigger multiple flowering events in a year. The tree’s foliage consists of small, glossy, pinnately compound leaves that help conserve water in its native habitat. Beyond its ornamental value, Brya ebenus produces a dense, dark, and durable hardwood prized in fine woodworking and instrument making, particularly for crafting fretboards and decorative inlays. Photographed in Panama.
