Zinnia elegans (Common Zinnia)
Native from Mexico to Nicaragua, this upright annual herb belongs to the aster family. Garden varieties range from about 6 inches to 3 feet tall, with single, semi-double or double flower heads in red, orange, yellow, pink, purple and white. The rough leaves grow in opposite pairs and clasp the stems. It is propagated from seed and is susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions. The flowers have also been used to make a yellow dye. The flowers attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, and are popular as cut flowers. Sun and good air circulation help reduce fungal leaf diseases. Photographed in Colombia and Florida.
