Zephyranthes rosea (Rosy Rain Lily)
Native to Colombia and Peru, this small bulbous perennial herb belongs to the amaryllis family. It forms clumps of narrow, grass-like leaves and produces pink, funnel-shaped flowers on slender stems. Flowering often follows heavy rainfall, giving rain lilies their common name. Grown in rock gardens, borders and containers, it can be propagated by dividing its bulbs or from seed. It has been introduced to Cuba, Florida, and many Indian and Pacific Ocean islands. The bulbs contain toxic alkaloids and can cause vomiting and diarrhea if eaten. Photographed in Colombia.
