Zephyranthes candida bears white six-tepaled flowers with yellow centers above dense narrow green leaves

Zephyranthes candida

Native from southeastern and southern Brazil to northeastern Argentina, this bulbous perennial herb belongs to the amaryllis family and forms grassy clumps about 6 to 12 inches tall. Its white, crocus-like flowers often appear after rain, giving it the name rain lily. Each leafless stalk carries a single flower about 1 to 2 inches across. Bulbs produce offsets that can be separated to grow new clumps. The ornamental bulbs should not be eaten. It has occasionally naturalized in disturbed sites in New South Wales, Australia. Photographed in Colombia.
