Wrightia coccinea

Native to northeastern India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and southern China, this tree belongs to the dogbane family and can reach about 65 feet tall. It grows in mixed forests and thickets on mountain slopes. Opposite leaves have pointed tips, and the fragrant flowers have broad rounded lobes and a crimson crown around the stamens. Its long seed pods open to release slender seeds with white tufts of hair. The flowers occur in small clusters at the ends of branches. Photographed in Florida.
