Witheringia solanacea bears clusters of green orange and red berries along a branch with broad prominently veined leaves

Witheringia solanacea

Native from Mexico through Central America and tropical South America, and to several Caribbean islands, this shrub or small tree belongs to the nightshade family. It can reach about 26 feet tall and grows in humid forests, along forest margins and in secondary vegetation. Broad leaves accompany small yellowish flowers and rounded berries that ripen from green to orange or red. The flowers become receptive to pollen before releasing their own, encouraging cross-pollination. Some populations can also set seed through self-pollination. Photographed in Colombia.
