Branching clusters of violet Vitex megapotamica flowers hang above the spreading green leaflets

Vitex megapotamica (Tarumã)

Vitex megapotamica is a deciduous tree or shrub native from eastern Bolivia to Brazil and northeastern Argentina. It grows along forest edges and in clearings, often in moist soils. The leaves are divided into several leaflets that radiate from a common point. Fragrant, lilac to purple flowers have a prominent lower lip. The small, rounded fruits turn deep purple to nearly black and are sweet and edible. Photographed in Colombia.
