Viburnum odoratissimum bears branching clusters of red and orange oval fruits among glossy green leaves

Viburnum odoratissimum (Sweet Viburnum)

Native from northeastern India to central China, Taiwan, and parts of Southeast Asia, this vigorous evergreen shrub or small tree belongs to the viburnum family. It can grow about 16 feet tall, with dense branches and glossy, leathery leaves that have shallow teeth near their tips. Cone-shaped clusters carry numerous fragrant white flowers. Oval fruits turn red and then black as they ripen; they are ornamental and should not be eaten. It has naturalized in Queensland, Australia, where some cultivated forms have spread into coastal forests. Photographed in Florida.
