Verschaffeltia splendida ringed palm trunk supported by a cone of spiny stilt roots

Verschaffeltia splendida

Native only to the Seychelles, Verschaffeltia splendida is a solitary rainforest palm most often associated with steep moist slopes. The ringed trunk develops conspicuous spiny stilt roots that support the palm above unstable soil. Large pinnate leaves form a high crown, and younger plants may retain undivided leaves with deeply notched tips. Photographed in Florida.
