Thunbergia mysorensis (Indian Clock Vine)
Native to southern India, this evergreen woody vine in the acanthus family twines through tropical montane forests and can grow about 33 feet long. Its glossy green leaves accompany hanging flower clusters up to 3 feet long. Each flower is about 2 inches long, with a gaping yellow throat and dark red lobes that curl backward. Sunbirds pollinate it in the wild. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. It has naturalized in Queensland, Australia, where it can invade bushland. Photographed in the central Andes mountain range of Colombia.
