Slender Stryphnodendron pulcherrimum flower spikes with yellow-green buds and rust-colored older flowers grow among finely divided green leaves

Stryphnodendron pulcherrimum

Native to tropical South America, this tree in the pea family grows in moist tropical forests. It can reach about 26 to 75 feet tall, with a usually straight trunk and a small, open crown. Its compound leaves are divided twice into many small leaflets. Tiny yellow-green to yellowish-white flowers are followed by pods containing dark brown seeds. Its mass flowering attracts many bees, including stingless bees in Brazil. The seeds have hard coats that make germination slow and uneven; scarification can help them germinate. Photographed in Florida.
