Yellow breasted Spinus-psaltria in a tree branch
Spinus psaltria (Lesser Goldfinch)

The Lesser Goldfinch is a small bird primarily known for its striking plumage and melodic song. It's a species of finch that is native to the Americas, with a range extending from the southwestern United States through Mexico and Central America to Colombia and Venezuela. Measuring about 3.5 to 4.7 inches in length, the Lesser Goldfinch is known for its distinctive coloration. The males typically exhibit a bright yellow underbelly with a black cap and white patches on the wings, while females and younger birds have a more subdued olive-green coloration. They usually have one brood per year. The female builds most of the nest, which is a dense, cup-shaped structure placed in trees or shrubs. The nests are intricately woven and lined with soft materials like hair, feathers, or wool.
The Lesser Goldfinch is currently not considered to be at risk with a population of over 10 million. The bird's adaptability to different environments, including those altered by human activities, has likely contributed to its stable population status. Photographed in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia.
