An orange Siparuna thecaphora flower with a yellow center beside a hairy brown fruiting receptacle

Siparuna thecaphora

This plant is a shrub or tree native from Mexico to Venezuela and Bolivia in the Siparunaceae family. It grows in humid forests and has opposite leaves with finely toothed margins. Small flowers have orange to red tepals. The rounded, hairy fruiting receptacles split open at maturity, exposing a red interior. Crushed leaves release a strong fragrance. Male and female flowers grow on separate plants, and the seeds have red fleshy coverings. Photographed in the western Andes mountain range of Colombia.
