The red-tailed squirrel, is a tree-dwelling rodent native to a vast range from southern Central America to northern South America. Interestingly, a small invasive population exists in Cuba, likely originating from escapees from the Havana Zoo. This species is classified as of "Least Concern" by the IUCN, suggesting it is not at immediate risk of decline in population numbers. These squirrels are adaptable, inhabiting a variety of forest types and elevations from sea level up to about 9,843 feet, and are even found in cities. Coat color variability is a hallmark of this species, leading to the description of numerous subspecies over time, although the current consensus recognizes six geographical subspecies.
