Salvia leucantha plants in the foreground of a blooming garden

Salvia leucantha (Mexican Bush Sage)

This plant is a bushy perennial subshrub native to Mexico and Central America. Its stems and narrow, lance-shaped leaves are covered in soft hairs, with especially woolly leaf undersides. Flowers grow in whorls along long, arching spikes. Velvety purple calyces surround the white or purple tubular flowers, giving the spikes their characteristic contrasting colors. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
