Salvia dombeyi long pendant scarlet tubular flowers hanging beside broad green leaves

Salvia dombeyi

Salvia dombeyi is a tall Andean shrub native to Peru and Bolivia. Large opposite leaves support long pendant scarlet flowers with narrow tubes and prominent lips. The species grows naturally in cool montane vegetation and high-elevation scrub, including sites above 9,800 feet, where nights are cold and sunlight is intense. Research-grade observations document it in Peru. The pendant corollas can become exceptionally long, making this species immediately distinguishable from shorter-flowered Andean sages. Photographed in Colombia.
