Salvia amethystina violet two-lipped flowers emerging from dark hairy calyces along a hairy stem

Salvia amethystina

This plant is an Andean shrub native to Colombia and northwestern Venezuela. Opposite aromatic leaves line branching stems, while tall flower spikes carry blue-violet two-lipped blossoms held in spaced whorls. Its square stems and opposite leaves reflect the structure typical of the mint family, while the inflorescences extend well above the foliage. Photographed in Colombia.
