This plant is a branching shrub in the Plantaginaceae family, native to Mexico, Central America, northern South America, and Cuba. Its slender stems carry opposite leaves or whorls of three, with ovate blades and toothed margins. Small, scarlet tubular flowers form clusters in the leaf axils and may nod slightly.
