Originating from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, Phoenix roebelenii, is a slow-growing, evergreen palm that typically reaches heights of 6 to 12 feet. The pygmy date palm is characterized by its slender trunk, which is often covered with old leaf bases, and a dense crown of gracefully arching, feathery fronds. It is a dioecious plant, meaning male and female flowers are borne on separate individuals; the flowers are small and cream-colored, emerging from among the leaves, and if pollination occurs, the female plants produce small, dark purple to black drupes that are edible. Phoenix roebelenii has been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. There are no widely known cultivars or hybrids of this species, and it does not hold the status of a national flower in any country. Its primary use remains ornamental, with no significant commercial applications beyond its role in landscaping and interior decoration.
