The Senegal date palm, which commonly graces landscapes in warmer regions, is cultivated for ornamental purposes in gardens and parks due to its picturesque clusters of curved, multiple trunks and is especially spectacular when fruiting. Not just a visual delight, this palm also bears edible fruit that, when ripe, are orange and about an inch in diameter. The fiber from this palm is used to create mats, ropes, baskets, string, and roofing material, and its leaves produce a brown dye. The sap can be fermented into palm wine. The palm is also known to hybridize freely with other cultivated Phoenix species, which explains the significant variation in appearance seen in cultivated specimens. Photographed in the department of Magdalena, Colombia.
