Native mainly to southern Africa, with other species in Africa, Atlantic islands, Australasia, and temperate Asia, this genus includes herbs and low shrubs. Flowers often have two larger upper petals marked with dark veins or blotches. Many species have aromatic leaves. Some introduced members have naturalized: Pelargonium capitatum grows along the coast near Newcastle and Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. Photographed in Salento, Colombia.
