Paphiopedilum callosum has a slipper-shaped flower with a purple and green striped upper sepal

Paphiopedilum callosum

Native to Indochina and northwestern Peninsular Malaysia, this perennial terrestrial slipper orchid grows in humid tropical habitats. Its mottled leaves form a compact fan beneath a usually solitary flower. The broad upper sepal has green and purple veins, while the petals bear dark spots and the pouch is flushed maroon. Flowers can measure about three to four inches across. It is endangered in the wild and is a parent of the widely grown Maudiae hybrids. Photographed in Colombia.
