Ortalis garrula (Chestnut-winged Chachalaca)

The Chestnut-winged Chachalaca, is endemic to Colombia and can be found in the northern part of the country, primarily in areas bounded by the Sinú River, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, and the lower Cauca and Magdalena River valleys. The Chestnut-winged Chachalaca inhabits a variety of landscapes characterized by thick vegetation, such as scrubby deciduous forests, arid scrubs, tropical thickets, and mangroves. It is typically found at elevations ranging from sea level to about 2,600 feet. The Chestnut-winged Chachalaca measures approximately 1.7 to 2.0 feet in length, with males typically weighing around 1.7 pounds and females about 1.4 pounds. Both sexes exhibit brown upperparts, which are lighter on the crown and nape, and a tail that is dark gray-brown with a white tip. They have a brown throat and upper breast, sharply demarcated from the white lower breast, flanks, and belly. Their primary flight feathers are bright chestnut, and their eyes are surrounded by bare reddish to black skin. The Chestnut-winged Chachalaca is known for its social behavior, often foraging in groups of up to eight individuals, generally in trees but sometimes on the ground. Unlike some other chachalacas, it is relatively quiet while gleaning. Its diet comprises both fruits and leaves, with a preference for fruits during the rainy season and leaves during the dry season. The species breeds during the dry season, typically between January and April, and builds simple platform nests in trees, with clutch sizes of up to four eggs. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has assessed the Chestnut-winged Chachalaca as being of Least Concern.
