Meriania hernandii flower

Meriania hernandii

Native to southern Colombia and northern Ecuador, this shrub or tree grows in Andean forests and along roadsides. Its large, rounded leaves have heart-shaped bases and a small disc where each leaf stalk meets the blade. Broad, branched clusters bear orange, five-petaled flowers. Bees grip individual stamens and vibrate them to release pollen through tiny anther pores. The flowers change from a partly bell-shaped form on their first day to a more open form from the second day, with the stamens bending farther outward. Photographed in the northeastern foothills of the Andes in Ecuador.
