A red bristly cephalium crowns the green ribbed and spiny stem of Melocactus bahiensis

Melocactus bahiensis

Native to eastern Brazil, this succulent cactus grows in seasonally dry tropical habitats. Its ribbed, rounded stem carries prominent spines. Mature plants develop a specialised flowering crown called a cephalium, densely covered with reddish bristles, from which small magenta flowers emerge. The flowers are followed by elongated fruits with red or magenta upper portions and pale bases. Photographed in Ecuador.
