Melocactus curvispinus cactus with vivid magenta flowers emerging between long brown spines and white wool
Melocactus curvispinus

Melocactus curvispinus is a succulent subshrub native from southern Mexico through Central America to Colombia, Venezuela and several Caribbean islands, where it grows mainly in seasonally dry tropical environments. Mature plants produce a specialized woolly flowering structure called a cephalium rather than continuing ordinary stem growth. The vivid magenta flowers emerge through dense white wool between long, curved brown spines. The species includes several recognized subspecies across its broad range. Photographed in Colombia.
